INQUIRY INTO THE NSW LIBERAL-NATIONAL GOVERNMENT'S COMPULSORY ACQUISITION OF LAND FOR TRANSPORT PROJECTS

This week Abigail is chairing a parliamentary inquiry into the impact of the NSW Liberal-National Government's acquisition of land for transport projects.

Whether it's for metro projects, new toll roads or even carparks, we're all just a Property Acquisition Notice away from losing our homes.

The residents of Orchard Hills have been through a heart-breaking process. These families aren't anti-infrastructure, they understand that properties sometimes need to be acquired. They just want to be made whole, to be able to move to a comparable home within the same catchment area for their kids' schools, to live within a similar distance from their workplaces and relatives - but instead they are offered compensation based on historic values that forces them to either move away from their community or to be significantly out of pocket.

There is nothing fair about the so-called Just Terms Compensation Act - it needs to be urgently reviewed and amended. In the meantime, the Govt needs to exercise its discretion under the legislation in a way that reduces the stress on those forced out of their family homes.
