All children and young people deserve access to a quality education that is safe, inclusive and suits their needs. But for too long, successive Liberal and Labor governments have perpetuated and exacerbated exclusion and discrimination against students with disability and their families in our education systems, from early childhood education to primary and high school and through to tertiary education.
It’s crucial that we keep the pressure on to finally take steps toward ensuring meaningful inclusive education. The Greens-chaired NSW parliamentary inquiry into the experiences of children and young people with disability in NSW educational systems has just wrapped up and tabled its final report — outlining exactly what is needed here in NSW to create an education system that delivers meaningful inclusive education.
Email the NSW Labor Government now, demanding they get on board with inclusive education and support our inquiry’s recommendations in full!
The inquiry made over 20 findings and 28 recommendations, including:
- Overhaul of our current education system and shift to one focusing on the rights of the child with disability rather than the school’s interests
- Independent oversight body to support, advocate & investigate for students with disability
- More support & pay for well-trained teachers & support staff
- Positive duty on schools to provide reasonable adjustments
- Shift from positive behaviour learning to a trauma-informed approach
The NSW Labor Government has until 22 November 2024 to respond to our report. Read the full report here.
Send a pre-filled email today urging them to accept and implement the recommendations in full.
