Did you know that, although it is unlawful in NSW to vilify someone on the basis of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex or HIV/AIDS status – it’s not unlawful to vilify someone on the basis of their disability?
The Greens think that’s simply unacceptable, and that’s why we’ve introduced our Greens Disability Anti-Vilification Bill, to ensure people with disability are properly protected from vilification and offensive behaviour.
Email key MPs from the major parties and the crossbench, urging them to support our Greens Disability Anti-Vilification Bill.
Embedding inclusion and equality in our laws is crucial in building a truly inclusive society. At its core, disability discrimination and inequality stems from a history of vilification, informed by deeply ingrained ableist societal structures that continue to perpetuate and permit the vilification of disability. We need a radical shift in perspective that embraces human diversity and recognises the inherent worth of all individuals, beginning with a clear rejection of, and protection against, vilification.
Including disability as a protected characteristic in our existing anti-vilification laws is a simple yet vital change that has long been called for by people with disability, their representatives, countless legal and advocacy organisations and even the Disability Royal Commission.
Adopting this reform would bring us one step forward in dismantling ableism and building a truly inclusive and equal society.
