No more missing greyhounds

A greyhound’s speed should not determine whether it lives or dies. But prior to 2016, at least 5,500 healthy greyhounds were being killed every single year in NSW, simply because they couldn’t earn their keep in the racing industry. And despite the 2017 industry reforms, we don’t know if this is still happening today.

It’s been years and yet too many greyhounds are still slipping through the cracks of the racing industry, at risk of being killed because of a loophole in the law.

That’s why I’ve introduced the Whole-of-Life Tracking Bill, which will ensure that greyhounds are tracked by GWIC (the independent regulator) for their entire lives and finally close the loophole that allows greyhounds to be written off the industry’s books and potentially killed.

Tell key MPs to support the Greyhound Whole-of-Life Tracking Bill!

When the NSW Government introduced the Greyhound Racing Act in 2017, then-Minister Paul Toole <a href="https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/bill/files/3377/2R%20Greyhound.pdf">stated</a> that the Bill would allow for ‘whole-of-life tracking for every greyhound that enters and exits the industry’. 
I know that when you voted for this bill in 2017, you did so under the assumption that the greyhound racing industry would be cleaned up. But when we were promised this key reform, we didn’t know that technicalities in the legislation would allow for greyhounds to slip through the cracks and become unaccounted for. 
In early 2020 the then-CEO of GWIC Judy Lind admitted that “when greyhounds are sold, retired, or given away to members of the public who are not industry participants, the Commission has no lawful right to intervene in any way in relation to those dogs”, which means that even though the Government said every greyhound would be tracked from birth to death, this isn’t possible under the current legislation. 
The NSW Government’s February 2021 announcement that e-Tracking would be put into place was warmly welcomed as a much needed development in ensuring the wellbeing of greyhounds across NSW, but it still doesn’t actually close this gap. 
That’s why I’m asking you to support the Greens’ Greyhound Racing Amendment (Whole-of-Life Tracking) Bill 2021. 
This Bill will amend the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 to expand the remit of the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission to include oversight of all rehomed and euthanised greyhounds, not just greyhounds owned by or euthanised in the care of industry participants. 
The Bill will set a requirement for the Greyhound Welfare Code of Practice to specifically address standards for rehoming and for euthanasia of greyhounds, and will expand the current definition of ‘greyhound’ to include all greyhounds which are or have ever been connected to greyhound racing. This will allow GWIC to investigate the welfare of greyhounds that are no longer owned by people immediately connected to the racing industry. 
I urge you to support the Whole-of-Life Tracking Bill and ensure that no greyhounds are left to fall through the cracks of the racing industry.
