We all have the right to breathe clean air. But right now, coal-fired power stations are pumping out toxic emissions that are increasing our risk of serious illness.
That’s why we’ve introduced the Clean Air Bill. If passed, it would tighten emissions restrictions on all coal-fired power stations, effectively requiring the installation of emission control technology that has long been standard across the United States, Europe and China.
For too long, coal-fired power stations have profited, refusing to pay for new emission control technology while forcing communities, like those across the Hunter, to pay the price with higher rates of serious illnesses like heart disease, lung cancer and asthma. And it’s not just people living nearby who are at risk – these toxic emissions travel over 200kms, across Sydney and throughout the state.
By tightening emissions restrictions on all coal-fired power stations in NSW, we can put the costs of managing their pollution back on the fossil fuel industry and protect the health and wellbeing of our communities.
