Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion recognising the 10th anniversary of World Kobane Day, commemorating the Kurdish resistance against ISIS in 2014 and affirming solidarity with Kurds in their continued pursuit of peace, justice, and freedom.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
(a) Friday 1 November 2024 is the tenth World Kobane Day, which marks the 134 day resistance of the Kurdish people against ISIS which besieged the Kurdish city of Kobane in 2014 and massacred innocent Kurdish civilians;
(b) led by the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit (YPG) and the Kurdish Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ), the liberation of Kobane sparked a broader movement across Rojava resisting fascism and military aggression;
(c) the first World Kobane Day was celebrated on 1 November 2014, when millions of people around the world took to the streets to celebrate the heroic resistance of Kobane and express solidarity with the ongoing global fight for Kurdish liberation and justice;
(d) the revolution of Rojava sparked a global movement of solidarity, resistance and common struggle which today extends across the world to all oppressed peoples fighting for peace, justice and freedom;
(e) the ongoing Kurdish fight for liberation, autonomy, and an independent Kurdistan has been marked by continued marginalisation and persecution for over a century; and
(f) today, the Turkish state continues to violate the human rights of Kurds across Rojava, and Kurds across the world continue to face political and social persecution as one of the world’s largest peoples without a state.
(2) That this House recognises the enduring strength of Kobane resistance and internationalist solidarity which is celebrated by many communities in NSW, and affirms its support for and solidarity with the people of Rojava who continue to fight for collective and lasting peace, justice and democracy.
