Today Abigail recognised an important day in our calendars: World Kangaroo Day.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- Friday 24 October 2025 was World Kangaroo Day, which was created in 2020 by Kangaroos Alive to raise international awareness about kangaroos as intelligent, sentient beings who have their own songlines, language, culture and dreaming;
- kangaroos belong to the Macropodidae family, with many types including the Red Kangaroo, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Western Grey Kangaroo, Antilopine Kangaroo, Common Wallaroo, Swamp Wallaby and Black Wallaroo;
- the word ‘kangaroo’ comes from the Aboriginal word ‘gangurru,’ which is the name given to eastern grey kangaroos by the Guuga Yimithirr people of Queensland’s tropical north;
- in 2021, World Kangaroo Day was endorsed by Uncle Max Dulumunmun Harrison of the Yuin People with the Yuin Declaration for Kangaroos;
- this year's theme is ‘Sacred Totem, National Icon’, to recognise kangaroos as both sacred totems for First Nations peoples and a global symbol of Australia;
- kangaroos are entwined and interwoven with First Nations cultures and totemic lores, and are respected by First Nations peoples for their prominent role in the regeneration of the Australian bush and in the survival of other native species like koalas;
- despite being internationally recognised as iconic Australian animals, kangaroos are victims of the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife in the world, with millions of kangaroos and their joeys killed each year for their skin to be used for leather and for their meat to be used in the pet meat industry and for human consumption;
- kangaroos live in mobs with complex social structures, and killing kangaroos has devastating effects on their mobs;
- in NSW alone, it is estimated that a kangaroo is killed every 30 seconds; and
- in addition to the commercial slaughter of kangaroos, NSW is one of five Australian states that allow legislative wildlife protections to be lifted so that kangaroos can be legally shot under commercial licences, or by landowners with management permits.
(2) That this House:
- recognises World Kangaroo Day and urges all Members to learn about kangaroos, their history and the threats they face; and
- calls on the NSW government to urgently act to protect and conserve kangaroo populations in the state.
