Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion marking World Kangaroo Day to recognise Australia's iconic, sentient marsupials and support the global call to end their commercial slaughter.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- Thursday 24 October is World Kangaroo Day, which was created by Kangaroos Alive in 2020 to recognise kangaroos as the incredible sentient beings they are, their unique contribution to maintaining Australia’s biodiversity, and to raise awareness for the threats to kangaroos;
- kangaroos are conscious, sentient beings with the ability to perceive and experience a range of emotions. Attachment is proven to be a significant part of kangaroos’ psychological make-up, meaning they develop strong social bonds with their mob. Kangaroos are entwined and interwoven with First Nations totemic lore, part of a living ancestral relationship between many First Nations peoples and kangaroos;
- kangaroos are victims of the largest legalised commercial wildlife slaughter on the planet, with up to 3 million kangaroos and their joeys slaughtered each year for pet meat, meat for human consumption and skin for leather. This industry has a significant impact on joeys, who are too small for commercial value and are either killed while in pouch or orphaned and left to die;
- animal welfare advocates across the globe have long campaigned for an end to the commercial slaughter of kangaroos, with major companies as a result moving away from using kangaroo products including Nike, New Balance, Puma, H&M, Prada, Chanel and Louis Vuitton; and
-
according to a survey commissioned by Kangaroos Alive, a non-profit organisation campaigning nationally and globally for a moratorium on the commercial killing of kangaroos:
- 98% of Australians support protecting kangaroos as part of a strategy to safeguard Australian ecosystems;
- 64% of Australians support ending the commercial killing of kangaroos; and
- 67% of Australians agree that other nations like the European Union and United States should halt their part in driving the commercial slaughter of Australian wildlife.
(2) That this House commends recent moves internationally to progress an end to Australia’s commercial kangaroo trade, and endorses the Global Declaration of the Kangaroo Welfare Crisis signed by over 80 global organisations, scientists and academics.
