World Down Syndrome Day 2022

Today Abigail spoke about World Down Syndrome Day, and urged the Government to better support the rights and wellbeing of all people with down syndrome.

Abigail said:

I move: (1) That this House notes that 21 March 2022 is World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which advocates for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down Syndrome.

(2) That this House notes that, according to Down Syndrome Australia:

(a) there are an estimated 14,000 individuals with Down Syndrome in Australia as of 2019, with only 12,190 of these individuals registered with NDIS; and

(b) people with Down Syndrome face disproportionate barriers and challenges to participation, opportunities, and access to services and support, which must be actioned by governments and organisations through awareness, education and inclusion at all levels of society.

(3) That this House calls on the New South Wales Government to commit to supporting the health, wellbeing, rights and inclusion of all people with Down Syndrome through robust policy which affirms equal rights and opportunities for people with Down Syndrome.
