Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion celebrating Our Watch’s primary prevention campaign, "The Line," for promoting healthy, respectful relationships among young people, and urging the NSW Government to support sustainable, expert-led programs to prevent gendered violence.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- “The Line” is an award-winning primary prevention, social marketing, behavioural change campaign by Our Watch, Australia’s leading team of experts in primary prevention of violence against women and their children,
- “The Line” supports young people aged between 14 and 20 to navigate, negotiate and engage in healthy, respectful and consensual relationships. The campaign is designed to be accessible and engaging for young people, with hundreds of online articles, video clips and interviews with and for young people rolled out across various platforms as well as online at www.theline.org.au,
- “The Line” also has educational resources for educators and practitioners to engage with young people in a nuanced and respectful way, on topics such as masculinity, pornography, gender, power and privilege and consent. These resources are underpinned by a strong international and domestic evidence-base from Our Watch’s Change the story: a shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia, and
- evidence-based prevention programs and services are critical in preventing and ending gendered violence, and it is important that such programs are resourced to operate sustainably and led by experts to ensure their success.
(2) That this House commends the team at Our Watch for carrying out nation-leading prevention work to engage with young people in a way that is accessible for them to ensure long-term outcomes.
(3) That this House calls on the NSW Government to commit to supporting the efforts of organisations such as Our Watch so they can continue carrying out impactful and holistic prevention work within communities.
Motion agreed to.
