Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion commending the vital support provided by TFSS for vulnerable people and urged the NSW Government to increase funding for essential DFV frontline services in regional areas.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- Tamworth Family Support Service (TFSS) is a non-government, community based organisation that has been delivering specialist services to vulnerable families in Tamworth and surrounding areas for 40 years, including Armidale, Walcha, Uralla, Quirindi, Manilla, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Inverell, Tenterfield, Moree, Boggabilla, Mungindi, and Barraba,
- TFSS provides critical frontline domestic and family violence services and programs including Staying Home Leaving Violence, Family Advocacy and Support Service, Co-location Pilot, Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service, Connected Healing for First Nations women, women's refuge and more,
- TFSS also supports people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness and at-risk children and young people and their families,
- according to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, women in regional, rural and remote areas are more likely than women in urban areas to experience domestic and family violence, and face unique issues and barriers related to their geographical location and the cultural and social characteristics of living in small communities,
- there is dire need for governments to address the specific issues in regional and rural areas including service delivery gaps, lack of full time domestic violence officers, lack of qualified trauma-informed frontline workers, the significant travel distance between towns required for victims to reach the nearest service, issues with safety devices due to lack of reception and more.
(2) That this House:
- commends the work of those at TFSS who provide critical dedicated support services for vulnerable people in Tamworth and surrounding areas, particularly victims of domestic and family violence, and
- calls on the NSW Government to address the significant barriers faced by victims of domestic and family violence in regional and rural areas, by providing additional funding and targeted support for regional and rural domestic and family violence services.
Motion agreed to.
