Sex work is work! Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion celebrating Sex Worker Pride Day and urged the NSW Government to commit to the full realisation of rights, respect and recognition of sex workers within policy and legislation.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House celebrates the vibrant, diverse and strong sex worker community here in NSW and across the globe, and reaffirms its support for ensuring the human rights, health and safety of sex workers in light of Sex Worker Pride Day on Saturday 14 September 2024.
(2) That this House notes that:
- this year was the sixth annual Sex Worker Pride Day since it was created in 2019 by the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) to glorify the achievements of this movement and allow sex workers to share survival and determination stories,
- sex worker pride is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the sex worker community as well as the many achievements of the sex worker movement across history in fighting for justice and liberation. Sex worker pride extends to all sex workers marginalised by criminalisation, discrimination and stigma across the global sex worker movement, and connects the local sex worker community here in NSW with the global community,
- the NSW Parliament has on numerous occasions passed calls for Government and society to take direct action to protect and remove barriers to sex workers’ rights, safety and justice, and to eliminate discrimination, violence and abuse faced by sex workers, and
- it is crucial that all allies across the world stand in solidarity with sex workers in fighting for visibility, inclusion, liberation and justice of sex workers. We must also recognise that this fight is ongoing, and words without action behind them are meaningless in achieving genuine justice for sex workers.
(3) That this House calls on the NSW Government to commit to embedding the full realisation of sex worker rights within policy and legislative decisions, including respect, dignity, autonomy, equality and the recognition of sex work as work.
