Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion congratulating the people of Scotland and Wales for choosing compassion over cruelty and voting to ban greyhound racing.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- in a historic moment, Scotland has become the second country in the United Kingdom to ban greyhound racing in the space of just over 24 hours, after a Scottish Greens Bill by MSP Mark Ruskell passed the Parliament by 70 votes to 27 on Wednesday 18 March 2026;
- Scottish Green MSP Mark Ruskell said about his bill passing, “the case against greyhound racing has never been stronger and the international consensus to end the suffering of these dogs is now unstoppable”;
- the Scottish Greens bill effectively shuts down the only remaining track in Scotland at Thornton in Fife, which has not opened since early 2025;
- on Tuesday 17 March 2026, Wales became the first nation in the United Kingdom to legislate a ban on greyhound racing, after a bill passed in the Senedd by 39 votes to 10 following an incredible years long community campaign led by greyhound advocates;
- the Welsh Labour government said in a statement that the ban “reflects a clear policy choice: that the injuries, fatalities, and poor post-racing outcomes associated with greyhound racing can no longer be justified. Despite efforts within the industry, harm to greyhounds has remained a consistent reality”;
- greyhound racing is now only legal in a handful of jurisdictions, with many of these not even having active tracks or plans for development;
- greyhound racing is nearly eradicated in the United States, illegal in 39 states with only three tracks left across Arkansas and West Virginia;
- New Zealand is phasing out its greyhound racing industry, due to shut it down for good this year within months;
- shockingly, NSW greyhound racing has the highest injury rate in Australasia, and possibly global greyhound racing, with a rate of 39.8 injuries per 1000 starts, according to the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission;
- the Minns Labor government has shamefully pledged to continue supporting the greyhound racing industry in NSW with public money, political cover and the Labor government’s public endorsement, despite overwhelming community pressure to shut it down; and
- community support for greyhound racing in Australia is declining rapidly, as whistleblowers and experts reveal more well-documented evidence of cruel and corrupt practices, including horrific violence and abuse perpetrated by powerful individuals within the industry, live baiting, doping and drugging, discarded greyhounds, overbreeding, cruel kennel conditions and more.
(2) That this House:
- congratulates the people of Scotland and Wales for choosing compassion over cruelty; and
- recognises that greyhound racing is being shut down across the world every day as more and more communities and governments say no to cruelty and corruption, and calls on the NSW Labor government to do the same.
