We must not look away from Palestine

Today in Parliament,  Abigail gave notice of a motion calling on the world to remain resolute in loudly and unequivocally demanding justice, lasting peace and a free Palestine.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1)     That this House notes that:

  • more than six months into the supposed ceasefire, the State of Israel is unrelenting in its genocidal campaign on the people of Palestine, continuing to expand its military control inside Gaza, regularly launching deadly attacks by air, artillery and direct shootings, and restricting humanitarian aid from reaching displaced civilians;
  • over 800 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces between October 2025 and May 2026, and nearly 1.8 million Palestinians (over 80 percent of the population) are living in displacement camps where scabies is widespread and public health risks are mounting, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs;
  • Gaza’s Government Media Office has documented more than 2,400 ceasefire violations between October 2025 and April 2026;
  • Israeli forces have advanced the so-called “yellow line”, the demarcation line where the Israeli army withdrew under the first phase of the supposed ceasefire agreement, to control 59 percent of the Gaza Strip, with civilians awaking each day to find the line had moved overnight, placing them in a free-fire zone under constant threat of air strikes and forced displacement;
  • the grave humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been further impacted by the US and Israel’s illegal wars on Iran and Lebanon;
  • amidst government inaction, a global coalition of activists, legal experts, parliamentarians, medical professionals, engineers, artists, journalists and other people of conscience have come together to form flotillas bringing aid and attention to the conditions being faced in Gaza in a declaration of solidarity and resistance;
  • on 30 April 2026, Israeli naval forces, armed and acting under state command, sailed into international waters between Greece and Italy and illegally intercepted and boarded civilian vessels by force, detaining around 175 crew members and abducting flotilla organisers Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila, who have reportedly been subjected to extreme brutality while held in isolation for interrogation; and
  • as the people of Palestine remain under siege, constantly bracing for a renewed offensive by Israeli forces while the apartheid state expands its military control of the territory, the world must not look away and must remain resolute in loudly and unequivocally demanding justice, lasting peace and a free Palestine.

(2)     That this House condemns the Australian and NSW Labor governments for their ongoing complicity in fuelling the State of Israel’s illegal occupation and systematic campaign of genocide, ethnic cleansing, collective punishment and forced displacement inflicted against the people of Palestine.

(3)     That this House calls on the Australian government to exercise every means available to it to end Israel’s illegal occupation and 19 year long siege of Gaza and the people of Palestine, including by enforcing a total arms embargo, demanding the arrest and surrender of wanted fugitives to the International Criminal Court, and imposing immediate sanctions against those responsible for Israel’s war crimes, illegal settlements and other crimes against humanity.
