Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion keeping the pressure on the Australian government to immediately enforce a total arms embargo on Israel amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- the state of Israel continues to violate the so-called ceasefire in Palestine on a daily basis, killing more than 922 Palestinians since October 2025, while Israel’s leaders make public statements indicating plans for further wide-scale annexation and ethnic cleansing;
- last week at a conference, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel will continue taking over yet more territory in Gaza, saying:
- (i) “We now control 60 percent of the territory of the Strip. We were at 50. My directive is to move to …”. Pausing briefly as someone in the crowd yelled, “100!”, he then responded: “Let’s go step by step. First of all, 70. Let’s start with that. We’re pressing them from all sides, we’ll deal with the remnants”;
- in the last week, the Knesset Education Committee in Israel has fast-tracked a bill to establish a heritage authority for the West Bank and Gaza, which would mark an unprecedented step toward annexation by granting Israeli civilian bodies powers over archaeological sites across Areas A, B and C in the West Bank as well as in Gaza;
- in the illegally occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers continue establishing illegal shepherding outposts on a weekly basis, which has become a primary method used to seize control of Palestinian land and forcibly displace Palestinians from their homeland;
- Israeli forces continue carrying out daily raids and illegal arrests across the West Bank, including on 21 May 2026 when Israeli forces set fire to farmland in Al-Mughayyir using tear gas canisters whilst firing on local Palestinians attempting to extinguish the flames;
- over 72,819 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli government since 7 October 2023, with many thousands more missing and presumed dead under the rubble, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health;
- week after week, governments including Australia remain silent and complicit in actively arming the State of Israel’s systematic campaign of genocide, collective punishment and ethnic cleansing against the people of Palestine; and
- in the face of ongoing injustice, cruelty and a disregard for humanity, the world must remain unwavering in our demands for a free Palestine.
(2) That this House calls on the Australian government to immediately enforce a total arms embargo on Israel, demand the arrest and surrender of wanted fugitives to the International Criminal Court, and impose sanctions against all those responsible for Israel’s war crimes, illegal settlements and other crimes against humanity.
