When will the NSW Government challenge the gambling industry and ban all forms of animal racing?

Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion commending the recent Nup to the Cup nationwide protests against the Melbourne Cup and year-round corruption and cruelty, calling on the NSW Government to ban all forms of animal racing in the state.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1) That this House notes that:

  • on Tuesday 5 November 2024 countless gathered and rallied across the country in every state in Australia to demand Nup to the Cup, protesting not only the Melbourne Cup but the layers of year-round cruelty and corruption it represents,
  • in the last decade, political donations to the Australian major parties from gambling companies involved in horse racing has surged by 632%, with the major parties having taken a combined $2.7 million from companies like Tabcorp, the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board, Responsible Wagering Australia and the Australian Racing Board,
  • the gambling lobby’s death grip on Labor and the Coalition is eroding the foundations of our democracy and fuelling exploitation, corruption and cruelty. If we are to finally shut down the animal racing industries we must first disentangle the gambling lobby’s insidious power over politics and our democracy,
  • during the last decade, over 1,400 horses have been killed on Australian tracks, which equates to one death every two and a half days, and in the last year alone, out of the 151 horses killed on Australian tracks 48 were in NSW making us the deadliest state, and
  • these figures do not account for the thousands of horses discarded and killed by the racing industry as wastage each year because of government failure to rein in the racing industry’s mass overbreeding and mandate a retirement plan for race horses.

(2) That this House commends the tireless dedication of the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses as well as the countless animal activists and community members who continue to fight for an end to horse racing and demand a ban on blood money political donations from the gambling lobby.

(3) That this House calls on the NSW Government to take a stand against the gambling lobby and racing industries and ban all forms of animal racing in NSW.
