Today during Question Time, Abigail shamed both the Government and the Opposition for refusing to implement the National Construction Code silver standard, highlighting the major parties’ ongoing neglect of accessibility in social housing for people with disability.
Abigail said:
On the issue of providing for people with disability, particularly with housing, it is incredibly frustrating for people in the disability community to listen to both sides. I say this with pun intended: a pox on both your houses. So far, both sides of this debate have failed to implement the silver standard in housing across New South Wales when they had the power to do so. I appreciate that the Minister says the Government is doing all it can to make social housing accessible. However, the fact remains that because the Government has not taken the step of applying the National Construction Code to the private market, there is more demand for social housing from people unable to find suitable houses in the private market. That needs to happen and, until it does, we cannot take the Government seriously on this issue.
