No more: national rally against violence

Today Abigail commended the recent national rallies against violence and called for government commitment to work with victim-survivors and the domestic, family, and sexual violence sector.

Abigail tried passing the following motion on formal business:

(1)     That this House notes that:

  • between Friday 26 July and Sunday 28 July 2024, countless Australians rallied across the country at over 26 locations as part of the “No more: national rally against violence”, which was organised by What Were You Wearing? Australia, a non-profit organisation of victim-survivors fighting to end gendered violence,
  • the demands of the rallies were for governments to properly fund domestic, family and sexual violence services and programs, men’s behaviour change programs and women’s refuges, trauma-informed training for all first responders, and a safer country for women and children,
  • in 2024, nearly two women have been murdered each week in Australia, with at least 44 women killed by violence this year so far according to the Counting Dead Women Australia researchers Destroy The Joint, and
  • right now, the NSW Labor Government is dangerously underfunding the domestic, family and sexual violence sector, and the total amount being delivered remains woefully inadequate given the scale of the problem it is seeking to address.

(2)     That this House:

  • commends the work of all those involved in organising rallies across the country, and all those who attended to rally for action to end gendered violence, and
  • calls on the NSW Government to commit to working with victim-survivors, advocates and experts in the domestic, family and sexual violence sector to meet their demands for action.

The motion was objected to.
