Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion commending the work of Moree SHAE Academy who provide free arts programs for hundreds of vulnerable young people every year.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- the Moree Sports Health Arts and Education Academy (Moree SHAE Academy) is a community-run youth and community hub that provides critical programs dedicated to fostering the growth and wellbeing of individuals particularly First Nations children and young people, through education, art and community health programs,
- the work of Moree SHAE Academy in providing free arts programs to around 100 to 200 children and young people every year underscores the critical value of grassroots arts education programs and services in supporting vulnerable children and young people to overcome barriers, feel a strong sense of confidence, pride and belonging, and explore new career pathways and avenues,
- the Academy is only partially funded by the federal government, and is currently operating with only one FTE staff and some casual staff to lead arts programs,
- the Academy also provides critical targeted referral pathways for individuals and families who interact with their services, to ensure that each participant receives the support they need to grow, recover and thrive, and
- community art education programs have immense benefits for children and young people in developing critical life skills, boosting creativity and imagination, developing social and emotional development and wellbeing, increasing motivation to learn, benefiting cognitive development, and so much more.
(2) That this House:
- commends the work of those at Moree SHAE Academy who dedicate their time and resources to support vulnerable individuals in the community, and
- calls on the NSW Government to commit to supporting community arts education for children and young people by investing in local community-run organisations that carry out critical programs and services like Moree SHAE Academy.
Motion agreed to.
