Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion condemning the Minns Labor Government's ongoing support of the barbaric and cruel greyhound racing industry in light of the recent Million Dollar Chase race at the deadly Wentworth Park track.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- the ‘Million Dollar Chase’ was once again held at Wentworth Park, one of Australia’s deadliest tracks, on Friday 18 October 2024. Community members, animal welfare activists and organisations joined together to protest the event and demand an end to greyhound racing in NSW;
- 8 of the 10 participants at this year’s Million Dollar Chase final meet had previously been found and charged with offences including multiple incidences of drugging, use of shock collars and marring;
- according to Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission Stewards’ Reports, 19 greyhounds sustained injuries during this year’s qualifying events, with 3 injured so severely they face extended 60 to 90 day stand-down periods (a fate often tantamount to a death sentence in this industry), and two greyhounds were injured on 18 October at the final meet;
- since the 2016 NSW ban on greyhound racing was overturned, racing at Wentworth Park has resulted in 2,333 greyhound injuries, of which 402 were ‘serious’ injuries, and 65 greyhound deaths; and
- the neighbouring community has consistently called for Wentworth Park to be returned to public hands and its use to be decided by the community, not the gambling and racing industries.
(2) That this House condemns the Minns Labor Government for its continued support for this cruel industry and its refusal to listen to repeated calls from community to call off the Million Dollar Chase, return the land at Wentworth Park to the community and shut down greyhound racing in NSW.
