In response to Prime Minister Albanese’s comments today regarding the federal government’s support for the AI industry, the Greens have called for stronger controls that put people and planet first, before big tech profits.
Quotes attributable to Abigail Boyd, Greens NSW Spokesperson for Energy and Spokesperson for Industry, Jobs and Trade:
“The Albanese government has today announced a new letterhead, accompanied by some vague values statements. What remains lacking is an actual plan.
“The forces of multinational tech billionaires are seeking to exert their influence on our society. Rather than leading the fight in our defence, the Albanese government has announced a tech bro concierge service.
“Where this leaves NSW is, in the continued absence of any strategy, plan or guardrails, in desperate need of a moratorium on AI data centres to allow regulations and safeguards to be put in place.
“There has been no justification for the need for urgency, other than to force these technologies and projects upon us before we’ve had the chance to democratically consider them. Nobody has asked us if this is the path we want to go down. These technologies, even if not actively harmful which remains up for debate, present a real opportunity cost to our society. They are inflationary, displace industrial, agricultural and residential land, consume construction resources and redirect workforces from other industries. These decisions all come with a cost, and right now the shape of our economy is being dictated by foreign multinational billionaires and trillionaires.
“A moratorium on new AI data centres must be put in place, while appropriate and robust protections are established. The only ones who benefit from a rush are the AI lobby."
