Today in Parliament, Abigail passed motion celebrating the life of Marion Gevers, whose shining legacy will live on in the Greens and across the broader community.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes with sadness the passing of Marion Hélène Pierre Gevers, who was a courageous and unwavering advocate for peace, justice and human dignity.
(2) That this House recognises that Marion was a staunch citizen of the world and defender of peace, justice and international solidarity, through both her work, activism and political life, and that:
- Marion was a deeply committed member of the Greens NSW, including through her leadership in working groups and committees such as Greens for Palestine (G4P), the Greens Political Education Trust (GPET), the Publications Committee, the NSW Greens Multicultural Committee, and the Greens Peace and Anti-AUKUS Campaign (GPAAC), of which she was a founding member, as well as countless grassroots initiatives such as Greenmail, Greenvoice, GPET online webinars, and Reboot23, Reboot24 and Reboot25;
- throughout her life, Marion championed all four pillars of the Greens NSW, and stood firmly in the belief that none of the three pillars of social justice, peace and non-violence or ecological sustainability can be achieved without persistently engaged grassroots democracy;
- beyond her political work, Marion sang with the community choir Ecopella at concerts, festivals and on the streets at climate rallies and protests, helping to spread messages of environmental and social justice through music;
- through her professional work as an interpreter and translator in the health system, including for Hunter New England Health and then as a freelance NAATI-certified translator, Marion helped countless people feel heard and understood with compassion, including thousands of refugees and migrants in their interactions with government and the broader community; and
- Marion was a founding member of Newcastle Grandmothers for Refugees, and fought tirelessly for justice for refugees and migrants through this group in the ten years since it was established.
(3) That this House acknowledges Marion’s profound and lasting impact on the plight for a fairer, more equitable and peaceful world for all, and expresses its deepest condolences to her family and comrades.
