Today I met with Greens Councillor Rochelle Flood and a group of Lane Cove residents who have become increasingly concerned about the scale and concentration of data centre developments planned for their suburb.
Lane Cove West is on track to become a major cluster of mega data centres, with five now either built, under construction or in planning. Understandably, the community is concerned about the impact that this level of industrial concentration will have on the local environment and the liveability of the suburb they love.
We met outside the proposed site of a 90MW data centre, just metres from a public school. In addition to the noise and disruption involved during construction, parents are very concerned about the potential health impacts of the 49 backup diesel generators planned for the site. Another key concern is that this project will involve knocking down an existing small business park, resulting in the net loss of hundreds of local jobs and forcing established businesses to move suburb.
This is yet another community who feel that their voices are not being heard – and that’s why our inquiry is so important.
