Today in Parliament, Abigail read out a motion calling out federal Labor's cruel NDIS cuts, and calling on the NSW Labor government to do everything in its power to ensure there are suitable, affordable, available and accessible services that meet the needs of all people with disability in our state.
Abigail said:
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- on Wednesday 22 April 2026, the federal Health and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Minister Mark Butler announced sweeping cuts to the NDIS, which sent waves of shock, fear and anxiety across the disability community;
- under the announced NDIS cuts, more than 160,000 people will be kicked off the NDIS by 2030, with new eligibility and assessment rules and processes set to be introduced in 2028 and existing participants to be reassessed against the new test as their plans come up for renewal, paired with dramatic cuts to social and community participation funding;
- instead of dealing with the actual systemic issues driving fraud and cost growth in the NDIS, the federal Labor government is choosing to demonise and scapegoat some of the most vulnerable people in our community and the essential, daily supports they deserve and are entitled to;
- losing access to essential, daily supports has incredible and often life-altering implications for people with disability, their wellbeing, mental and physical health and ability to participate fully and equally in their communities;
- following the federal Labor government’s significant changes to the NDIS introduced over the last few years, people with disability are being reassessed and removed from essential NDIS supports at unprecedented rates, with no access to alternative supports or even a guarantee of future supports from any level of government; and
- the disability community have loudly expressed ongoing alarm and fear at the NSW government’s failure to even communicate with them anything regarding its role in the changes to disability service provision announced in recent months and years, despite that state and territory governments are supposedly expected to fill the major gaps in service provision.
(2) That this House:
- affirms that people with disability, their rights and their essential supports are not a political football;
- affirms that it is a fundamental responsibility of governments to ensure that all people in our community can equitably access the supports they need to live full, equal, safe dignified lives, just as it is the responsibility of governments to actively dismantle individual and structural ableism;
- rejects any attempts by state or federal governments to undermine the rights and futures of people with disability and their families and carers;
- calls on the NSW government to make a commitment to the disability community to do everything in its power to ensure there are suitable, affordable, available and accessible services that meet the needs of all people with disability in our state; and
- encourages all Members and everyone in the community to attend the National Day of Action on Saturday 9 May 2026 as communities across Australia join together to protest against the Albanese Labor government’s cruel and indefensible NDIS cuts and make it clear that disability rights are non-negotiable.
