Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion acknowledging KinHub, a volunteer run centre supporting inclusivity and connection for children with disability.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- KinHub is a volunteer community-run hub in the Inner West led by Corinne Smith, working to support school-aged children and young people with disability and their families who face barriers caused by a lack of inclusion in mainstream educational settings,
- KinHub facilitates inclusive learning and support for families who can’t or don’t attend school for a variety of reasons, providing opportunities for collaboration and connection aimed at fostering personal growth and improving wellbeing,
- initiatives like KinHub prove that when children and young people with disability are provided with the support they need in an inclusive and adaptable environment that is not restrictive, they can grow and thrive,
- schools across NSW do not consistently deliver inclusive education that supports diversity and inclusion and provides targeted support and adjustments for all school-aged children and young people with disability that meets their learning needs, and
- in order to achieve truly safe, equal and inclusive education, we must fundamentally transform our educational systems and eliminate ableism through cultural change and proper funding and resourcing.
(2) That this House:
- commends the work of KinHub in providing a safe and inclusive space for school aged children who have been excluded from mainstream educational settings, and
- calls on the NSW Government to support community-run initiatives like KinHub to ensure that school aged children and young people with disability and diverse needs are supported in a way that properly meets their learning needs.
Motion agreed to.
