Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion recognising the International Day of the Girl Child which acknowledges the rights of girls and the unique challenges they face worldwide.
Abigail said:
I move:
(1) That this House notes that:
- Saturday 11 October 2025 marked the International Day of the Girl Child, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 to recognise the rights of girls and the unique challenges they face worldwide;
- 2025 also marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, which set out the global vision for advancing women's and girls' rights;
- the 2025 theme, "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis", reflects the leadership of girls across the globe in movements for climate justice, the fight to end gendered violence, and the struggle for a fairer future; and
-
entrenched gender inequality remains a daily reality, and as reported in the 2024 Status of Women Report Card:
- one in three Australians hold a negative bias about women's ability to participate fully in economic, political or educational life;
- more than half of all female victims of sexual assault are under the age of 18; and
- girls are more than twice as likely to experience child sexual abuse than boys, and one and a half times more likely to experience emotional abuse.
(2) That this House recognises that the empowerment of girls is critical to breaking cycles of poverty, inequality and violence.
(3) That this House celebrates the strength, resilience and diversity of girls in our State, and the achievements made in the fight to dismantle sexism and create an inclusive, equitable, safe and accessible world for all.
(4) That this House calls on the Government to commit to ensuring all girls in New South Wales have access to safe and high quality education, healthcare and housing.
Motion agreed to.
