The NSW greyhound racing industry was given a second chance in 2016, but it’s clear that it is incapable of being reformed. Time and time again, we have heard damning and well-documented evidence of cruel and corrupt practices across the industry including live baiting, doping, discarded greyhounds, cruel kennel conditions and fudged rehoming numbers. And every month there is another death on NSW tracks — 10 greyhounds killed this year already, with another more than 2,000 injured while racing.
This is an industry fuelled by gambling that will always put profits and prize money above the welfare of greyhounds. How many more greyhounds must suffer at the hands of this cruel industry before we finally begin shutting it down?
We must urgently begin a process to transition greyhound racing industry workers and impacted communities out of this cruel and untenable industry — such a plan must include a ban on commercial greyhound racing, training and reskilling for affected workers, and the repurposing of tracks into green community owned spaces.
In the meantime, we must have transparent parliamentary oversight of Greyhound Racing NSW, accountability of exactly how public money is being spent by industry participants, genuine whole-of-life tracking for greyhounds that are in any way exposed to the industry and immediate breeding caps.
Email the Racing Minister and key MPs demanding they put the greyhound racing industry on a tighter leash.
