Greens demand Labor stand in solidarity with workplaces and schools organising for Palestine

Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion calling on the NSW Government to uphold the democratic right to peaceful protest across all organisations, businesses and educational institutions and to publicly condemn the ongoing genocide in Gaza and to halt the provision of weapons to this genocide.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1) That this House notes that:

  • people across NSW in their workplaces, schools, universities and communities have been organising in support of Palestine and in protest against the failure of state and federal Labor Governments to condemn the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza and to call for a permanent and lasting ceasefire and an end to the illegal occupation of Gaza;
  • community groups from all facets of society have been protesting every week in their community including Palestine Action Group Sydney, Teachers and School Staff for Palestine NSW, Trade Unionists for Palestine, Jews Against the Occupation NSW, Creatives for Palestine and so many more;
  • students and staff at universities across NSW are organising groups for Palestine, including Western Sydney University, University of NSW, Macquarie University, University of Wollongong and University of Technology Sydney, which have been peacefully protesting and demanding divestment from the ongoing genocide in Gaza and an end to the occupation; and
  • peaceful protest action and organising in one’s place of work or education is a vital democratic right, and not only sends a strong statement of support for social justice causes but puts significant pressure on corporations and institutions to seriously consider the demands of staff and students and make changes to their policies and practices.

(2) That this House affirms its unequivocal support for all individuals and groups organising and taking peaceful protest action in their workplace, place of education and community in support of the fight for peace, justice and freedom in Palestine and calling out the moral and political failure of federal and NSW Labor governments in their continued aiding and abetting of the genocide in Gaza.

(3) That this House calls on the NSW Government to commit its support for those taking peaceful protest action, and calls on all organisations, businesses, and educational institutions to listen to the demands of their workers and students, publicly condemn genocide and end all partnerships with weapons manufacturers providing weapons to support the genocide in Gaza.
