Gas is a dirty, polluting fossil fuel – it has no place in our future clean, green energy mix. We can’t keep pouring fossil fuel on the climate change fire.
But that’s exactly what’s being proposed right now in the Southern Highlands, where developers are planning to build a new gas power station the size of Kurri Kurri, just to power an AI data centre.
What’s being proposed is a massive 673 megawatt gas-fired power station in the Southern Highlands Innovation Park just six kilometres from Moss Vale. This gas-fired power station would be the second largest gas plant in NSW, and would be enormously polluting and environmentally disastrous, while only providing power to the rows and rows of data centre halls on the 67 hectare site.
If big business gets its way, these technologies that are supposedly of the future are going to be powered by fuel sources from the past. We can’t allow that to happen, and especially not in the beautiful, green Southern Highlands.
The NSW government must immediately reject this disastrous proposal for a mega gas plant, and rule out any future proposals for data centres charged by fossil fuel plants.
Who would have thought that in 2026 we’d have a Labor government even considering approving a new gas plant, let alone one of this size and capacity. Approving this project would be an environment and climate disaster.
Email the Minns Labor government now calling on them to reject plans for a climate destroying gas station in the Southern Highlands.
