We sail until Palestine is free

Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion in support of the new Freedom Flotilla, the Maldeen, which set sail toward Gaza this week.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1) That this House notes that:

  • this week, after over 600 days of Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestine, the Madleen, a new Freedom Flotilla vessel, has set sail toward Gaza in another attempt to break Israel’s illegal siege and secure a humanitarian corridor, carrying international human rights defenders and critical aid including baby formula, food, diapers, women’s sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies and children’s prosthetics,
  • the previous Freedom Flotilla vessel, Conscience, was halted just one month ago when a drone attack hit and damaged the ship in international waters off Malta as it headed towards the Palestinian territory,
  • 15 years ago, the first Freedom Flotilla set sail attempting to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, a small unarmed fleet of ships carrying civilians, journalists and humanitarian workers with humanitarian aid and construction materials. When the Israeli government unlawfully attacked the fleet, killing nine activists and wounding dozens, the message then was clear: even peaceful humanitarian efforts would be met with violence,
  • according to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, aid distribution in Gaza has now become a death trap after over 31 Palestinians were killed and 170 wounded while trying to access food at the Israeli-American distribution point in Gaza’s south, and
  • the Freedom Flotilla movement’s mission is “we sail until Palestine is free”; it has become a symbol of global resistance and refusal to surrender to Israel’s collective punishment and campaign of deliberate starvation, and a reminder that the siege on Gaza is maintained not only by Israeli military force but by global inaction and complicity. International action in the face of inhumanity and injustice has the power to shift the world’s moral compass, but it depends on conscience and the will to act.

(2) That this House calls on the Australian Government to:

  • commit to supporting safe passage for Maldeen and all humanitarian vessels,
  • impose immediate sanctions on Israeli officials and entities responsible for Israel’s war crimes, illegal settlements and crimes against humanity, and
  • immediately enforce a two-way arms embargo on Israel.
