The Labor Federal Government continues the cycle of chronic underfunding in the domestic and family violence sector in the 2024-25 Budget

Today in Parliament, Abigail moved a motion slamming the Federal Government for the measly crumbs they have allocated to the domestic and family violence sector in the 2024-25 Budget and urged the NSW Government not to follow in their shameful footsteps in the upcoming NSW Budget.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1) That this House notes that:

  • achieving the Federal Government’s ambitious goal of ending gendered violence in a generation requires ambitious investment,
  • the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said regarding domestic and family violence, that “we can change it and we must change it”,
  • the 2024-25 Federal Budget has failed to listen to the cries of the public and domestic and family violence sector calling for transformative levels of funding, and
  • funding for implementation of the 10-year National plan to end violence against women and children remains insufficient.

(2) That this House further notes that:

  • amidst chronic systemic underfunding of the domestic and family violence sector and inadequate government action to address the issue of gendered violence, the Federal Government has announced a forecast surplus for the second year running.

(3) That this House expresses its frustration and disappointment with the Federal Government’s response to domestic and family violence, and its failure to meaningfully invest in frontline domestic and family violence services.

(4) That this House calls on the NSW Labor government to not allow the federal government’s lack of ambition impede greater NSW government action, commit to additional funding to essential frontline domestic and family violence services in NSW and provide funding to tackle the domestic and family violence crisis at a level at least comparable to the Victorian Government in the forthcoming NSW 2024-25 Budget.
