May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month

Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion in solidarity with every person who has been impacted by domestic and family violence and called on the NSW Government to commit to properly funding the frontline services that victim-survivors depend on.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1)     That this House notes that:

  • May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, with community events, vigils, educational campaigns and targeted actions held across the month with the core mission of advancing progress to eliminate domestic and family violence in all its forms and create a society where every person is safe, equal and protected;
  • in paying respect and honouring those whose lives have been taken by domestic and family violence, we must not stop fighting to end violence in all its forms by confronting the drivers of violence, dismantling the legal, social and institutional systems that enable abuse, and properly investing in the evidence-based services and programs we know work;
  • eliminating and preventing violence cannot and will not be achieved through empty words and platitudes by governments;
  • violence against women and children is not inevitable, and it is preventable;
  • police are called to a domestic violence incident every three minutes in NSW;
  • one in four women and one in eight men in Australia are impacted by domestic violence in their lifetime; and
  • in the first four months of 2026, at least 18 women have been killed in Australia, the majority of whom were killed in domestic and family violence incidents, according to Counting Dead Women Australia researchers of Destroy The Joint.

(2)     That this House recognises and honours every life that has been impacted by domestic and family violence across our communities, and affirms its solidarity with all victim-survivors and all those who have lost loved ones to domestic and family violence.

(3)       That this House calls on the NSW government to properly fund the evidence-based programs and frontline services that we know keep women and children safe and will turn the domestic and family violence crisis around.
