Deceptive Dairy: the dark truth behind Australia's camel milk industry

Australia's expanding camel dairy industry is built on a cruel deception, capturing wild camels and marketing their exploitation as ethical and sustainable. Today in Parliament Abigail gave notice of a motion commending Animal Liberation's upcoming "Deceptive Dairy" exposé which is set to blow the lid on it.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1) That this House notes that:

  • much like Australian dairy cows, sheep and goats, Australian camels are exploited by the dairy industry, however this exploitation is far lesser known about by many in the public;
  • the camel dairy industry is an expanding industry where wild camels are captured and diverted to camel dairies where they are conditioned, bred and sold for their milk which is deceptively promoted by the industry as a supposedly healthier, more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to cows milk products;
  • many camel dairies promote themselves as a sanctuary for camels who have been rescued from the wild, however the cruel reality is that these camels are either forced into a life of commercial milk production, or sent to slaughter if they are male due to their lack of economic viability;
  • camels are sentient, social and highly intelligent beings capable of experiencing a wide range of emotions, including joy, fear, grief and trauma, and form complex social bonds;
  • Animal Liberation is launching its upcoming expose entitled “Deceptive Dairy” which will spotlight the truth about the exploitation of camels by the Australian camel dairy industry; and
  • Animal Liberation has previously exposed the cruelty and exploitation of camels in the tourism industry, in an Australian-first investigation “Breaking the Camel’s Back” which heard from industry whistleblowers and published shocking footage of wild camels captured and subject to abuse for the purpose of so-called entertainment.

(2) That this House commends the team at Animal Liberation and all those involved in the Deceptive Dairy campaign, and encourages all Members to tune into the expose for its launch in the coming weeks.
