For the first time in twenty years, more than 1,000 ABC journalists and staff have walked off the job

Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion in solidarity with over 1,000 ABC staff who have striked after management offered a one-off $1,000 payment that excluded casuals and attracted no super, while asking workers to accept more work, less job security and no real pay rise.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

(1)     That this House notes that:

  • for the first time in two decades, more than 1000 journalists and staff at the ABC went on strike for 24 hours from 11am on Wednesday 25th March 2026,
  • the protected industrial action followed over 90% of staff voting in favour of the action as part of their ongoing campaign to secure sustainable jobs, fair pay and improved working conditions, and to protect the quality news and programming Australians rely on,
  • the decision to strike followed ABC staff voting no to a revised enterprise agreement offer from management that included limited improvements to job security but no increase to pay or key conditions compared with the previous offer. Management’s proposal also included a one‑off $1,000 payment that would not be added to base salaries, would not attract superannuation, and would exclude casual staff, and
  • Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance Chief Executive, Erin Madeley, said “Experienced journalists and media workers are being asked to do more with less – with fewer opportunities for pay progression, less certainty about their future, and growing workloads. This isn’t just a workforce issue. When skilled, experienced staff are forced out, communities lose trusted local voices, particularly in regional Australia where the ABC is often the only local newsroom.”

(2)     That this House congratulates Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance members at the ABC for taking this historic action.

(3)     That this House calls on the national broadcaster, the ABC, to work with the staff and their union to agree an offer that properly reflects the value of ABC staff and protects the future of Australia’s public broadcaster.
