Greens call for protection of NSW wildlife from deadly SGAR poisons

Today in Parliament, Abigail gave notice of a motion calling for the urgent action to ban second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) due to their deadly impact on native wildlife.

Abigail said:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move:

1. That this House notes that:

a. native wildlife including threatened native birds, marsupials and mammals are being poisoned and killed by second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs), a deadly class of chemicals which are readily available for purchase on supermarket shelves and online, and used by many businesses and local councils across NSW;

b. in December 2025, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) handed down the findings of its four-year review of the poisons;

c. the APVMA stopped short of recommending a blanket ban on SGAR products, failing to act on mounting evidence of the serious risks posed by these toxic poisons and instead proposing a set of inadequate measures that will not deliver any meaningful reduction in wildlife deaths from SGAR poisoning;

d. the APVMA is now seeking submissions on the proposed regulation of SGARs;

e. Australia is lagging behind other jurisdictions who have taken action to get rid of SGARs, including the United States and parts of Canada where they are banned from public sale, and the European Union where SGARs are highly restricted;

f. environmental scientists, wildlife experts, animal advocates and members of the community have consistently called for SGARs to be removed from public sale; and

g. more local councils across NSW are taking action to restrict, phase out or eliminate SGARs from council operations, and call on state and federal governments to take action, including Albury City Council, Campbelltown Council, Clarence Valley Council, Coffs Harbour City Council, the City of Sydney, the City of Ryde, Northern Beaches Council, North Sydney Council and Tweed Shire Council.

2. That this House commends the many local councils, individuals, businesses, experts and advocates across NSW who have taken action against SGARs in an effort to protect our precious wildlife.

3. That this House encourages everyone in the community to have their voices heard, by making a submission to the APVMA’s ongoing review.

4. That this House calls on the NSW government to:

a. legislate a ban on the retail sale of SGARs;

b. amend the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 to include SGARs in the list of key threatening processes;

c. amend the NSW government’s pest management practices for state-owned properties to prohibit the use of SGARs;

d. encourage landholders through Local Land Services to avoid the use of SGARs and responsibly manage pest issues through licensed professionals; and

e. commit to advocate to the Australian government to bring all anticoagulant rodenticides onto the restricted chemical products list including SGARs.
