Today Abigail gave notice of a motion calling for urgent action to ban the use, sale and possession of SGARs, a deadly substance that is killing our wildlife.
Abigail said:
(1) That this House notes that:
- despite overwhelming evidence of the harm second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are inflicting on an alarming number of native wildlife and on biodiversity, these lethal poisons are still sold over the counter in Australian supermarkets and regularly used by individuals, businesses and government agencies;
- SGARs are found in common rodent poisons and frequently result in secondary poisoning of non-target animals, sometimes through entire food chains; once a rodent, or oftentimes an unsuspecting possum, ingests the poison, not only does it die a painful death but the poison remains in the body long after it has died and goes on to kill other animals who prey on the dead rodent or possum, such as owls, quolls, Tasmanian devils and eagles;
- the use of SGARs in Australia has been under review by the Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority since 2021, with the final regulatory decision now months overdue and set to be delivered any day;
- over 280 researchers, academics, conservationists, farmers, doctors, veterinarians and other experts working to protect Australia’s biodiversity and wildlife have signed a powerful open letter led by BirdLife Australia, expressing grave concerns about the widespread use of SGARs and calling on decision-makers to eliminate the use of SGARs;
- Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world by allowing these harmful poisons to be sold over the counter in supermarkets and with no regulation on their use or possession, with the United States, Canada and the European Union having imposed restrictions or bans on SGARs years ago; and
- more local councils across NSW are taking action to restrict, phase out or eliminate SGARs from council operations, and call on state and federal governments to take action, including Albury City Council, Campbelltown Council, Clarence Valley Council, Coffs Harbour City Council, the City of Sydney, the City of Ryde, Northern Beaches Council and Tweed Shire Council.
(2) That this House commends the many local councils, individuals, businesses, experts and advocates across NSW who have taken action against SGARs in an effort to protect our precious wildlife.
(3) That this House calls on the NSW government to:
- legislate a ban on the retail sale of SGARs;
- amend the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 to include SGARs in the list of key threatening processes;
- amend the NSW government’s pest management practices for state-owned properties to prohibit the use of SGARs;
- encourage landholders through Local Land Services to avoid the use of SGARs and responsibly manage pest issues through licensed professionals; and
- commit to advocate to the Australian government to bring all anticoagulant rodenticides onto the restricted chemical products list including SGARs.
