Today in Parliament, Abigail passed a motion recognising World Support Staff Day and celebrating the vital role support staff play in our schools, thanking them for their essential contribution to building an inclusive and equitable education system.
Abigail said:
I move:
- That this House notes that:
-
- Friday 16 May 2025 was World Education Support Personnel Day or World Support Staff Day, which was created by Education International, the global federation of more than 370 education unions, including the Australian Education Union, the Independent Education Union of Australia and the National Tertiary Education Union, to give visibility and recognition to support staff, their work and their contribution to quality education;
- World Support Staff Day celebrates the vital roles of support staff in realising the right to education, fostering positive, safe learning environments and supporting and sustaining our educational communities, including teacher assistants, administration officers, business managers, Aboriginal education, youth workers, community liaison officers, library technicians, VET coordinators, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other staff in non-teaching roles;
- support staff are part of the education community, and play an important role in ensuring that the academic, socio‑emotional and practical needs of each individual student are met; and
- all support staff across our education systems deserve the right to fair and equitable pay and entitlements, fair and safe working conditions, quality terms of employment and the right to contribute to and participate in the decision‑making of their educational institutions.
- That this House recognises the important role of support staff in an equitable and inclusive education system, and thanks all support staff across New South Wales for their dedicated commitment to keeping our schools running, supporting students and ensuring quality education for all.
